The Director of Production Support and Commercial Department at Iran Cultural Heritage, handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO), Mr Mehdi Kiyaie said that, the handicrafts sector in the country had the potential to create 20 million jobs and generate an export turnover of US $10 billion.
He expected an increase in the share of the handicrafts trade within the next five year development plan (2010-2015). The official lamented the fact that, though non-oil exports have been given special privileges, the handcrafts sector was growing at a very slow pace, which had the potential to contribute substantially to the economy of the country.
He said that, the problems within the handcrafts sector should be identified and programs prepared to overcome these problems be developed to increase the existing market share in foreign markets. He added by saying that a sustainable export strategy was needed to promote and create a presence as well as maintain conditions in international markets.
