The Andhra Pradesh government decided to waive off, all outstanding loans and accrued interest amounting to Rs 3,270 million from all the weavers and the handloom cooperatives. This move on the part of the government is expected to help around 4 million weavers.
This relief measure from the government has come on the demands from the weavers cooperatives to waive off their loans on lines of those done for agriculture farmers and also due to a rise in suicide rates among the weavers.
The poor handloom weaving cooperatives and weavers of the state have been hampered by inadequate support from the government as well as not having the marketing support to sell their products, which had led to deplorable levels among the weavers.
