Govt decides to reopen two state owned silk mills

The Government in Bangladesh has taken a decision in principle to reopen the state owned Rajshahi and Thakurgaon Silk Mills under the aegis and management control of the Bangladesh Sericulture Board (BSB), seven years after these mills shut their operations.

The mills had to be closed down in 2002, due to allegations of mismanagement and trade unionism, which affected the running of the mills in a proper manner and ultimately led to these mills suffering heavy losses, which the Govt could not bear any more.

The BSB was set up under the Ministry of Textiles and Jute, to promote the development of silk sericulture and the industry as a whole.
