Embroidered handicrafts help revival of earthquake hit economy

The Sichuan earthquake other then bringing destruction in the province has also changed the vocations and lifestyles pursued by the people in the region. The local populace has taken to embroidery of handicrafts to sustain their livelihood.

A enterprise in Hong Kong has donated 1 million Yuan to build a training cum exhibition center in Beichuan county to help train potential workers in the art of embroidery and also exhibit their products at the same venue to earn a living from the same.

Since, these people who are agriculturalists by profession have lost their farm lands in th earthquake which shook the province in early 2008, they have once taken to the art of Quiang ethnic embroidery, which was practiced by their ancestors long ago.

A village level training programme had been arranged in December, last year, which saw people enthusiastically participating in the training and which also led to over growing interest from people from other counties, leading to more training programmes being organised.

The local populace of Sichuan hopes to revive the 600 year old art of embroidery and make a decent living from the vocation.
