Bursa is the textile capital of Turkey. Since the economic crisis has unfolded, the textile and apparel manufacturing units in Bursa have been affected to a very large extent, resulting in shutdowns and leading to unemployment of workers.

The man-made or synthetic yarn industry has felt the impact the most as most of the closures in the industry have taken place in this very important sub-sector. According to experts, the local units are not able to compete with China and India.

According to data, exports of textile products have slipped by 21 percent and that of clothing by 32 percent in January 2009, which has raised concerns across the whole industry in Bursa, since its economy is largely dependent on this sector.

Meanwhile, Mr Ibrahim Burkay, Chairman of the Ulludag Textile Exporters Union (UTIB) has demanded that the textile sector also should be given incentives of the like which have been announced for the automobile and consumer electronics sectors.

He advised the government to announce another comprehensive stimulus package, which should include all the affected sectors, particularly, textile and its ancillaries, which he claimed were facing troubled times due to the economic crisis.
