After a protracted time, the Nepalese government has finally taken a decision to wind up operations of the loss making Biratnagar Jute Mills. The Jute mill has a capacity to produce 42 tons of jute, of which it is utilizing only 24 tons capacity at present.
A task force compromising of officials from different committee had been formed to look in to the viability of restarting full capacity operations of the jute mill, which concluded that it would not be feasible to revive the operations of the mill.
There are about 1,039 workers working in the mill and who would be eligible to receive retrenchment allowance from the government. Earlier the government had laid-off all the temporary workers of the mill after paying them their wages.
