China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles issued an urgent warning to textile and garment exporters as, exports from the sector to the US grew too fast in the first two months of this year.
Quoting from the data released by Textiles and Apparel Office (OTEXA) of U.S. Department of Commerce, it warned the exporters of a backlash from the trade bodies in the US, which could be followed up by the administration.
Data released by OTEXA reveals that U.S imports under 222 category (knitted fabrics) from China in the first two months of 2009 reached 48,118,000 square meters, a y-on-y increase of 119 percent.
While, imports under 347 category (men's cotton trousers) hit 1,671,000 dozens, a y-on-y increase of 71 percent and imports of category 348 (female-style cotton pants) scored 4,390,000 dozens, a y-on-y increase of 53 percent.
Imports of 339 category (female-style cotton knit shirts and underwear) and 652 category (underwear made from man-made fibre) grew more than 50 percent. This growth could prove to be a liability, they aver.
