What happens when art, fashion & chemistry collide?

London Fashion week may have finished, but the University of Sheffield continues to celebrate fashion in style with one of their talks from the 2009 Arts-Science Encounters programme, discussing what happens when art, fashion and chemistry collide.

Professor Tony Ryan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science at the University and Helen Storey, a research professor at the London College of Fashion discussed how they have created wonderlands, where haute-couture dresses are made to dissolve and disappear and detergent bottles can melt down to a gel that can grow new plant life, thus challenging the future of packaging in the home & personal care and fashion industries.

Professor Ryan commented: "The talk has aimed to give people an insight into what fashion, art and chemistry can really create. It is exciting to see fashion mixed with a discipline such as chemistry, as they are two academic subjects that you would not normally associate with each other. By combining this with the environmental perspective we hope to educate and motivate people to be aware of the ethical issues involved with these industries, especially in time when so many people want to be environmentally aware of their impact."

A Chemist´s adventures in wonderland took place on Tuesday 17 March 2009 at the Douglas Knoop Centre in the Humanities Research Institute, as part of the 2009 Arts-Science Encounters programme of talks.
