A bill has recently been cleared in the parliament of Tajikistan, limiting exports from a few chosen sectors under the pretext of protecting local producers. Anti-dumping measures are expected to be imposed on a slew of products ranging from textiles, garments to carpets and other goods.
Experts have derided the government over the decision by saying that since Tajikistan does not have a proper base for production of these products, the prices of these goods in the local markets will go through the roof, once controls are put in place.
According to the parliamentarian, who proposed the motion of restricting imports, he said, since imported goods do not meet the best quality standards and nor are our products up to export standards, it was imperative under the situation to protect local companies.
