Varanasi handloom weavers submit memorandum
Apr '09
Handloom weavers associated with the 1,200 member strong Banaras Bunkar Samiti, Varanasi famous for its silk sarees, submitted a memorandum to the President of the Congress party, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi while on an election campaign in this city.

In the communication, the weavers have urged Mrs. Gandhi to sympathetically look in to the problems and grievances of the handlooms weavers who are at their wits end ever since the global recession trends have overtaken the markets.

They urged her to set out policies and measures which will help these traditional weavers to connect with the main stream development of the country, otherwise it would lead to mass unemployment in this centuries old traditional textile sector, they warned.

Amongst the requests, they have asked for the formation of a separate handloom and handicraft ministry, impose anti-dumping duty on imported Chinese silk fabrics provide credit to handloom weavers at low interest rates and many other such demands.
