Writing in a quarterly market report, the President of the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR), wrote that the first quarter of 2009 has been very quite for the textile recycling industry and there have been no wide market fluctuations, despite the crisis.

Mr Olaf Rintsch continued to say, “There may be problems in the automobile industry, but not one textile recycling company has had to worry about surviving through the crisis and though market for recycling grades continued to be difficult, demand for wiping cloth was steady”.

Mr Rintsch, who also manages the German textile recycling firm Textil Recycling K. & A. Wenkhaus GmbH, added, “A glut of clothing in the spring could flood the market and it should not be forgotten that spring collections are imminent”.

Continuing in the same vein he said, “One can only hope that these will not result in an oversupply and an ensuing price collapse since sorted clothes are continuing to sell well in Africa and order books are overflowing”.

Giving his comments on the impact of the French textile policy which imposes a eco-levy on sales of new clothing to fund textile recycling he said, “Till date, it has not impacted the industry in any whichever so manner”.
