Shanghai Petrochemical Company Ltd, a Sinopec company, has successfully developed an eco-polyester product that is metal-free and environment-friendly through adopting a novel catalyst and now the product has been taken up for commercial production.
It will be possible for textiles and apparels produced from this polyester to obtain and qualify for EU Eco-Label and Oeko-Tex, which will help textile enterprises to gain opportunities and enhance their competitiveness in these crucial times.
This new polyester product which has been branded as 'NEP' has the same appearance as traditional polyester products, but its gloss and transparency is better and only three companies in the United States and Japan have been able to manufacture this product.
The 'N' in 'NEP' represents Non-heavy (no heavy metal), 'E' indicates Ecology (Ecological) and 'P' represents Polyester (PET), the combination meaning a heavy metal-free, eco-polyester product."
NEP polyester has been jointly developed by Shanghai Petrochemical and Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute of Sinopec by adopting a new titanium-based catalyst, which has been independently developed by them.
