Chinese textiles face resurgence in protectionist measures

Europe, the United States and other developed countries have increased trade protection measures against Chinese textile and apparel products since last year, due to which, China's export enterprises face deteriorating trading environment.

The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) began to release its statistical report every two weeks from December 1, 2008 onwards, particularly related to monitoring imports of Chinese textile and apparel.

In February this year, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Council (CPSC) also called for new safety requirements for all imported textiles and apparels and levied a heavy fine for those who did not comply with the norms.

At the same time, National Council for Textile Organisations (NCTO) said on March 16 that China's textile and garment exports to the United States increased dramatically this year, and called on the Government to take control measures.

The situation in the European Union too does not look optimistic and some member countries have proposed to remain vigilant on imports from China, even though the monitoring system relating to textile imports concluded last year.

It has been reported that European textile industry lost 350,000 jobs in the past two years, mainly due to a 5 percent reduction in the number of textile companies, which has led to resurgence in matters related to protectionism.
