Cumbria breeder wins Wool on the Hoof championship

A Jacob ram from a leading Cumbria breeder won the coveted Wool on the Hoof championship on the final day of this week's Great Yorkshire Show.

Acclaimed as one of the strongest “wool on the hoof” championships seen at the show for some years, the supreme championship went to a two-shear ram from the well known flock of Ulverston breeder Clive Richardson.

The home-bred ram, from a long line of winners bred in Mr Richardson's Border flock, the was unbeaten in his breed classes last year and stood male champion at the Royal Highland Show last month.

Judge Malcolm Hudson, a retired wool buyer and grader from Shipley, West Yorkshire, said this year's wool on the hoof competition was “truly outstanding”.

“There were several really top quality sheep whose fleeces were in contention for top honours right up until I made my final decision. The Wensleydale and Ryeland entries were very good indeed but the sheer quality of the Jacob won the day. The Jacob's fleece was clean and consistent over the whole ram and had everything you would expect from a top quality wool fleece from this breed,” said Mr Hudson.

A jubilant Mr Richardson said the win proved the quality of wool the Jacob is capable of producing.” The fleece is a vital part of the Jacob sheep and I try to maintain the highest quality possible as part of my breeding programme.”

Stephen Ballinger, the British Wool Marketing Board's Regional Manager, said the wool on the hoof competition had produced some top-notch entries representing the particular fleece qualities of each breed.

“But the Jacob fleece was a worthy winner. It had the unity of length and fineness that's looked for in a really high quality fleece from this breed with no black fibres in the white wool,” said Mr Ballinger.
