Trade body advises to lift ban on import of textiles & apparels

The President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Solomon Onafowokan, said that the government should consider lifting the ban on import of certain goods in to the country, since it has failed in its purpose.

The intention behind importing certain goods was to promote the domestic industry, but large scale and unchecked illegal imports of goods had defeated the purpose behind banning imports of certain products, he said.

Amongst the banned goods are textiles, apparels, footwear, bags and many other items. These illegal imports have cornered a huge market share and it would be proper to legalize these illegal imports and earn much needed revenue, he added by saying.
