According to a latest report, cotton cultivated on 1.33 million hectares in the states of Punjab and Haryana is still in good condition despite, the scanty rainfall across India.
But cotton sown in the biggest cotton producing state; Maharashtra could be in trouble along with that of in Rajasthan if rains are delayed further.
Already, sowing operations have been delayed in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, again due to the delay in rainfall, which is expected to have an impact.
These, all put together portend a shortfall in cotton production in the country in the current season, which could prove to be big setback for the textile sector.
As per the statistics of the Cotton Association of India, cotton arrivals of the previous season touched 28.84 million bales (1 bale=175 kg) till the first week of August.
