The Federal Government has once again lowered the cotton crop production targets from 13.2 million bales (1 bale=175 kg) to 12 million bales, following a pest attack on the standing crop in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MINFA), Mr Rehman said that every effort would be put in to control the virus pest attack and achieve production of 12 million bales.
Production of cotton has been declining continuously since the last five years and experts attribute the same to poor government policies, pest attacks, poor quality of cotton seeds and fertilisers.
Standing cotton crop on 3.2 million hectares of land in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab, which are the largest cotton producing states have been affected by bollworm and Curl Leaf Cotton Virus (CLCV).
