Representatives from various textile clusters in Tamil Nadu met Commerce Secretary, Rahul Khular and sought 'town of excellence' status to their respective towns. Khular was here to participate in AGM of Federation of Indian Export Organisations'.
The textile clusters include powerloom clusters in Erode, Coimbatore and Salem and the apparel cluster in Tirupur and the leather industry from Ambur.
The status would help the clusters, especially SMEs, in receiving financial assistance directly from the commerce ministry and also enable them to improve their infrastructure, besides, improving working conditions of the workers.
They represented by saying that, irrespective of the fact that, the TUF scheme is being implemented through the Powerloom Development and Export Council, rural infrastructure needs to be developed in major textile clusters.
They also urged Khular to announce a 2 percent incentive for exports to the US and European Union from clusters like Karur, which is a hub of the home textiles sector that includes madeups from powerloom or processed fabric.
