Index of cotton in 'Non-Food Articles' group grows by 2%

The official Wholesale Price Index for 'All Commodities'(Base: 1993-94 = 100) for the week ended 12th September 2009 rose by 0.2 percent to 242.6 (Provisional) from 242.0 (Provisional) for the previous week.

1. INFLATION
The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 0.37 percent (provisional)for the week ended 12/09/2009 over (13/09/2008) as compared to 0.12 percent (Provisional) for the previous week (ended 05/09/2009) and 12.42 percent during the corresponding week (ended 13/09/2008) of the previous year. Build up inflation in the financial year so far was 6.12% compared to a build up of 6.62% in the corresponding period of the previous year. 52 week average inflation for the week ended 12/09/2009 was 3.22%.

2. PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02%)
The index for this major group rose by 0.2 percent to 275.3 (Provisional) from 274.7 (Provisional) for the previous week. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for 'Non-Food Articles' group rose by 0.5 percent to 239.8 (Provisional) from 238.7(Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of groundnut seed (6%), gingelly seed and fodder (2% each) and raw silk and soyabean (1% each). However, the prices of tobacco (3%), rape & mustard seed and raw cotton (2% each) and raw rubber, copra, cotton seed, castor seed and linseed (1% each) declined.

3. MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 63.75%)
The index for 'Chemicals & Chemical Products' group declined by 0.1 percent to 229.1 (Provisional) from 229.3 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and purified terephthalic acid (pta) (3% each).

The index for 'Machinery & Machine Tools' group rose by 0.5 percent to 173.3 (Provisional) from 172.4 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of other cables (11%), rubber insulated cables (7%), carding machine (4%), p.v.c. insulated cables and enameled copper wires (3% each) and other textile machinery (2%). However, the prices of ring spinning & doubling frames (4%), boilers, its parts & accessories (2%) and textile machinery parts (1%) declined.

4. FINAL INDEX FOR THE WEEK ENDED 18th July 2009
For the week ended 18/07/2009, the final wholesale price index for 'All Commodities'(Base:1993-94=100) stood at 239.2 as compared to 236.8 (Provisional) and annual rate of inflation based on final index, calculated on point to point basis, stood at -0.54 percent as compared to -1.54 percent(Provisional) reported earlier vide press note dated 30/07/2009.
