Following an unsuccessful tripartite meeting among power-loom unit owners (cloth manufacturers), job order unit owners and representatives of the workers, an indefinite strike has been staged by the power-loom workers in Komarapalayam, one of the major textile centres in the region.
The workers are demanding a 50 paisa wage hike per meter of woven cloth. But, the owners said that they can afford to increase only by 10 paisa per meter. They also said that as a wage agreement for the period up to February 27, 2010 is already in force, it is not possible to increase wages at present.
After tripartite meeting, the job order unit owners held a separate talk and came to the conclusion that wage increase of the workers cannot be made effective unless the power-loom unit owners increase the rates.
The job order unit owners decided to go on an indefinite strike along with the workers supporting their demand for higher wages.
