On an appeal from the South Africa Clothing and Textile Workers' Union (Sactwu) to the International Trade Administration Commission in late May, the Govt has accepted the recommendations to increase customs duty across all clothing articles.
The previous duty structure which was prevailing at 40 percent has been increased by 5 percent to 45 percent and will encompass most of the cases and comes in with immediate effect. Sactwu has welcomed the move of the government.
In a statement, the union trade body said, "Sactwu welcomes the additional protection afforded to local jobs and industrial capacity, especially when the industry is in the midst of an extensive restructuring exercise."
