A delegation from Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) recently visited and met retailers in the US and European Union and have received assurances to the effect that, they will continue buying Australian wool, despite the wool industry not meeting the non-mulesing deadline.
The wool sector had agreed to find an alternative to mulesing of wool and set the deadline for 2010 to adopt non-mulesing methods, following campaigns and protests from animal rights groups and also due to a possibility of a potential boycott from its overseas buyers.
According to the CEO of AWI, Brenda McGahan, the retailers were unhappy to hear that deadline would not be met, but a majority of retailers accepted the reasons delved out by the AWI delegation for not being able to meet the deadline.
According to the CEO, the retailers have convinced the delegation that they will continue purchasing and sourcing Australian non-mulesed wool, which indicates that they love Australian wool.
