Use of ecological raw materials in handicrafts is escalating competitiveness of handicrafts of Catacaos (Piura) in the international market, said Mr. Hernan Macalupu, the Executive Director of “Joyeria de Catacaos” Technology Innovation Center.
Peruvian artisans avoid toxic materials in the production of handcrafted items like straw, tissues and pottery, instead they prefer plant derivatives to prepare dyes to be used in handicraft production, he added.
Further he underlined that the artisans must be offered permanent training in a bid to create new designs and develop new products consistent with market trends, which will provide them opportunities to achieve competitiveness in international markets.
In this regard, he pointed the work done by Fundacion Romero in benefit of handicrafts of Piura, which helps artisans to augment their productive and management abilities and provides support to participate in international fairs.
To impart training to the artisans and increase their contribution with regards to handicrafts to help them increase market shares in local and international markets are the key objectives of Fundacion Romero, which in turn will improve artisans' incomes and living conditions.
