The textile production process across the whole value chain generates carbon emissions right from the first stage of petrochemicals, dyeing, processing, washing, ironing as well as transportation.
A study by the University of Cambridge shows that a cotton T-shirt (250 gms in weight) will produce about seven kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions in its “life cycle”, which is 28 times of its own weight, while garments made from chemical fiber materials will produce higher carbon emissions.
In the current context of the climate control conference being held in Copenhagen, it will be a challenge to the Chinese textile industry to speed up structural adjustment, encourage the development of new textile industries, support high-tech research and develop applications in order to reduce carbon emissions.
