Union Minister for Textiles inaugurates National Handloom Expo
The Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Dayanidhi Maran inaugurating the National Handloom Expo as a part of “Handloom Week”, organized by the Ministry of Textiles, in New Delhi on December 21, 2009.
Handlooms Sector is the biggest employer after agriculture and Government is committed to sustain and develop it, so that cultural vibrancy is maintained and new employment opportunities are created, particularly for weakest section of the society, said Thiru. Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Textiles. He was inaugurating the National Handloom Expo a part of the first ever “Handloom Week” being organized by Textiles Ministry from December 21 to 28, 2009 all over the country.
Thiru Maran, said there is an urgent need to provide marketing linkages to handloom clusters and his Ministry is in talk with Planning Commission to enhance allocation for this sector.
With a view to spread awareness about the handloom products, during “Handloom Week” , Handloom expos will be organized at Chennai, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Jaipur, Mumbai, Bhilai, Dehradun, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bengaluru, Puri, Kannur, Tirupati, Dimapur, Sibsagar, Bhopal, Chandigarh, and Patna.
To add glitter to the week long celebrations, an Exclusive series of fashion shows “Symphony in weaves: The Handloom ensemble” showcasing the products developed by handloom clusters and designed by the designers from the North East institute of Fashion Technology will be held at Delhi (December 21, 2009), Chennai (December 26, 2009), Hyderabad Guwahati (December 28, 2009) and Patna (December 29, 2009).
The mega health camps for the weavers would also be organized as a part of Handloom Week at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh (December 20, 2009), Coimbatore, Tamilnadu (December 22, 2009), Hannur, Karnataka (December 23, 2009), Birhum, West Bengal (December 23, 2009), Bargarh, Orissa (December 24, 2009), Sibsagar, Assam (December 27, 2009).
