The Knoxville Museum of Art is delighted to present "Wind/Rewind/Weave," a major exhibition of work by visual artist Anne Wilson. For three decades, Wilson has been regarded as an innovative and remarkable voice in the visual arts. Her work rests at the forefront of artwork connecting conceptualism and handiwork, activism and aesthetics.

"Anne Wilson: Wind/Rewind/Weave" investigates the global crisis of production and skill based textile labor through three major works: "Rewinds," a new sculpture created entirely in glass; video documentation of "Wind-Up: Walking the Warp," a 2008 performance in Chicago; and a large site-specific project, "Local Industry," that takes the form of an active weaving/winding factory set up in the museum space.

From January 22 through April 25, 2010 the Knoxville museum public will become collaborators, volunteering time each day to wind bobbins of thread. The wound bobbins will be used to weave a single bolt of cloth, produced on a single loom setup in the gallery, by a group of experienced weavers from the southeastern United States.

Anne Wilson is a Chicago based visual artist who creates sculpture, drawing, video animations and installations that explore themes of time, loss, private and social rituals. She uses diverse source materials that are familiar and rich with cultural meanings. Wilson's work has been presented at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan; the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and as part of the 2002 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Wilson's art is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Art Institute of Chicago; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Detroit Institute of Arts; the Museum of Glass, Tacoma; and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, among others. Wilson is the recipient of grants from the Driehaus Foundation, Artadia, the Tiffany Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Illinois Arts Council.

"Anne Wilson: Wind/Rewind/Weave" is organized by Chris Molinski, Associate Curator for Education, Knoxville Museum of Art.
