Observing the current trends, Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director, EPCH said ''prevailing scenario in the industry indicates that there should be a complete turnaround in exports zith the beginning of the next financial year i.e. April 2010.”
Major competing countries for India in the world market are China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Taiwan and Turkey, Mr Malhotra added.
The handicrafts exports declined by 48.35% to about $ 1.8 billion in the previous financial year 2008-09 and now the overall down trend has been arrested to a great extent with decrease in the US $ term to 4.86% till January 2010 to $1254.08 million but it recovered by 2.03% in rupee term at Rs 5015.92 crore.
EPCH is the nodal export promotion body for handicrafts in India under the aegis of Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India.
