The cotton crop output in the next season is threatened due to the delay, by a month in release of irrigation waters. The other challenge is also posed by a delay in supply of Bt certified cotton seeds to the farmers.

According to Chairman of Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA), Rana Abdul Sattar, cotton farmers are still awaiting release of irrigation waters, which has been delayed by around 30 days as well as they have not been supplied certified Bt cotton seeds.

He observed that, the experience of cultivating early has always been successful, as it leads to achieving quality cotton, along with providing higher yields, as well as prospects of pest disease are also reduced.

He noted that it would be impossible to achieve the production target of 13.6 million tons, set by the Ministry of Agriculture looking at these factors. In the 2009-10 cotton season, cotton output stood at 12.6 million tons against a targeted 13.3 million tons.
