During a joint meet with farmers, the Punjab Minister for Agriculture, Ahmad Ali Aulakh informed that, the target of 9.7 million bales set for cotton production will be achieved by using newly approved Bt and hybrid variety of seeds.
The Bt type of cotton has been permitted by Punjab Seed Council for the first time, ever since the process commenced eight years ago.
As these Bt cotton seeds possess strong resistance against 'boll worm', Aulakh hopes that the manufacturing of cotton in Punjab will increase considerably by growing these varieties.
More over, stringent actions are also being taken against seed firms that are involved in selling duplicate and poor quality of cotton seeds.
The farmers were also informed during the meet that, agriculture officers will be monitoring the fields in order to guide the farmers for on-time cultivation of cotton.
While, this year, 6.178 million acres of land has been fixed for cultivating cotton in Punjab, 1.92 million acres of land has already been utilized, averred Aulakh.
Aulakh now hopes that, farmers would supervise their cotton crops with the help of state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies to help increase their income.
