There are only four companies in China producing Caprolactam. Caprolactam output in China was 334,000 tons in 2009. Import volume stood at 601,300 tons and export volume touched 16,000 tons.
Domestic demand reached 930,300 tons in 2009, which means China's dependence on imports was 64.64 percent. Shandong Haili Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. will be starting its 200,000 tons/ year Caprolactam project in October.
In 2003, China imposed anti-dumping import duty on Caprolactam imports originating from Japan, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and the measure expired in 2008.
In April of this year, the Ministry of Commerce announced that the state would launch anti-dumping investigation on Caprolactam imports originating from the European Union and the US.
Currently, China's nylon industry is realizing a double-digit growth rate per year. Demand for nylon chips will increase by 300,000 tons from the end of last year to the end of this year.
This will mean that, China's dependence on Caprolactam imports will stay beyond 60 percent in the next three years and the dependence is expected to expand further, after that.
