Govt assures testing laboratory to FHAN

Revenue Secretary, Krishna Hari Baskota, assured representatives of the Federation of Handicraft Association of Nepal (FHAN) that, a dedicated handicraft village and a cadmium testing laboratory will soon be established, fulfilling the dream of thousands of handicraft artisans.

The government has assured FHAN that it will provide 49 percent participation in establishing a testing laboratory for handcrafts in the new financial year, informed Bikash Ratna Dhakwa, President FHAN.

The association is seeking government's help for establishing testing laboratory and wants the authority to certify handicraft goods, on the parameters of quality and metal content, following the commencement of laboratory operations.

Handicraft exports of Nepal witnessed a plunge during the period June-August, regardless of the peak season. These exports decreased by 10.42 percent during these 10 months against the same period last year. The overall handicraft exports stood at Rs 2.181 billion during this 10-month period.

Products, including, felt products, textile items, silver, products made of handmade paper, glass, bone and horn, ceramics, incense and stone crafts witnessed increase in demand from overseas markets, during the aforesaid period. Export value of total textile items accounted to Rs 1.165 billion and that of non-textile products stood at Rs1.016 billion, during these 10 months.

During the reviewed period, the overall export of textile products experienced 17.82 percent plunge, while the non-textile export has grown slightly by 0.10 percent.
