Exports of hand-woven carpets witness rise of 37%

Within the first three months of the current Iranian year, which commenced on March 21, 2010, country's hand-woven carpet exports have recorded a 37 percent rise.

Exports of hand-woven carpet totalled to $104 million in value, which indicated a 36.7 percent rise as against the corresponding period, last year, informed Feysal Mardasi, Head of Iran's National Carpet Centre.

Mardasi also informed that, during the said period, exported carpets weighed 16,254 tons, which shows a 38.3 percent rise as compared to the same period last year, which was 11,747 tons.

US being the largest purchaser of Iranian carpet, Mardasi added that, US's purchase of Iranian carpet has totalled to $17 million, during the first three months of this year.

Following US are Qatar, Germany, UAE, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Sweden, France, Lebanon, Canada, Austria, Britain, Kuwait, Australia and Denmark

Currently, Iran is the world leader in exports of hand-woven carpets. Persian rugs are in great demand for their intricate design and skilled craftsmanship, hence, Iran exports carpets to over 100 nations around the world. Carpet-weaving is one of the most renowned expressions of Persian culture and art and it hails back to the historic Persia.

Around 1.2 million Iranian weavers manufacture carpets for both local markets and global exports. The country manufactures 5 million square meters of carpets on a yearly basis, of which 80 percent are sold in world markets. In 2007, Iran had earned $750 million from exports of carpet.
