Currently the textile and apparel sector in China is facing many challenges. The latest is that the largest US trade union organization is planning to petition to President Obama, requesting him, to investigate the labor situation in China.

The American Federation of Labor - Industry Association Federation will ask President Obama to investigate whether China's unfair competition has been related with the low wages paid to its workers.

The union once submitted a petition to President Bush in 2004, asking President Bush to investigate the situation of Chinese workers, but their demand was refused.

The union claimed that current wages of Chinese workers showed great disparities to their productivity.

If the Government accepts the petition, US trade officials will complete investigation of Chinese labor conditions within one year, and on basis of findings, determine the next steps.

The United States Trade Representative (USTR) must decide within 45 days whether to accept or reject such a petition, if the union decides to submit a petition to Obama. It is reported that the union has 11.5 million members.
