Favorable climatic conditions for the jute crop and soaring demand for jute products is making farmers living in Sahibganj district in the state of Jharkhand to shift to jute cultivation. Jute, which is widely used for manufacturing bags and other sundry items, is witnessing demand in carpet industry due to its fine quality.

These farmers want government to take steps to set up a factory in the region in order to boost the demand for raw products. According to a jute farmer here, they do not get customers for jute. They would have witnessed good business if a jute production unit was set up in the region, as they now have to sell the same in West Bengal, he added.

Climatic conditions in Pakur and Sahibganj districts of Jharkhand were favorable to grow jute in raw form. Jute requires warm and humid climate with 24 to 35 degree centigrade temperature to grow. It grows well at the optimum temperature of 34 degree centigrade, added Mr. Kader.

In the year 2009-10, India produced 10.49 million bales of raw jute, against 10.25 million bales produced in the previous year. Around 60 percent of country's overall jute produce comes from West Bengal and Orissa and northeastern states contribute to rest of the jute output.
