Various plans for improved trade access for Pakistan as well as suggestions on temporary postponement of duties on major Pakistani textile goods will soon be discussed by European Union Trade Ministers. EU Trade Chief, Mr. Karel De Gucht has submitted a proposal, which is the part of a new EU strategy framed to assist Pakistan's embattled textiles sector.

Mr. Karel recently met, Commerce Secretary, Mr. Zafar Mahmood and Foreign Minister of Pakistan Mr. Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who also communicated with the EU foreign policy Chief, Mr. Catherine Ashton. EU Foreign Ministers will also discuss aid and reconstruction options for Pakistan. Experts plan to frame long term agenda for Pakistan.

The proposed suspension of tariffs on Pakistani textile products by Mr. Gucht will be time-bound, targeted, and implemented quickly. Other options such as Islamabad's demands for urgent access to duty-free GSP Plus scheme of the EU and World Trade Organization's duty waiver on Pakistani exports would be intricate and take much time to implement.
