In the first five months of the present Iranian year which commenced on March 21, witnessed the country's carpet exports going up by around 50 percent to touch US $204 million. In the same period, shipments of hand-woven carpets rose by 49.37 percent, year-on-year.
Carpet exports from the country may exceed $500 million by close of the fiscal year. In order to boost exports of carpets, the 19th Hand-Made Carpet Grand Exhibition would be organized in Tehran, capital of Iran during September 23-29. The expo would showcase carpets, rugs, kilims and Persian handicrafts.
United States is the largest importer of Iran's hand-made carpets and each year imports around $17 million worth of carpets from the country. Iranian carpets are exported to over 100 countries across the world.
Each year, the country produces around five million square metres of carpets, and 80 percent of the same is exported to overseas markets. There are around 1.2 million weavers in the country.
