Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has asked the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to review the government's decision to permit cotton exports from October. In his correspondence with the PM, he mentioned that cotton exports would raise prices of cotton in the local market, which will severely affect the textile industry.

Tamil Nadu is one of the most important producers of textiles in the country. Several lakh workers are engaged in this sector. Majority of these workers are handloom weavers who depend upon their day-to-day income for survival.

He pointed out that it is important to ascertain that the local demand for cotton is fulfilled before giving consent to the export of cotton. Currently, the country is experiencing cotton supply shortage. On top of that, if, India ships cotton to countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh and China which are its major competitors in global textile trade, it would aggravate the situation further.
