Hike in wool prices were registered again in the joint North and South Island sales. Coarse crossbred wools were the main focus of attention for the buyers. Full fleece was 10 percent more costly and price of second shears recorded a rise by another 13 percent.

Price of fine crossbred fleece was 5 percent higher whereas the shorter varieties recorded a hike between 2 to 11 percent. Merino wool, especially the 19-micron and the finer ones, were sold for 6 percent more prices but the coarser wool varieties recorded a fall in prices between 3 to 6 percent.

The prices of mid micron fleece varied by five percent against prices set by the wool producers. Out of the 20,000 bales of wool on offer, over 90 percent were sold. The unsold wool mostly belongs to the category of mid-micron and coarser merino variety.

The current week's wool sale has been called off because of existing wool shortage which has been further intensified by the bad weather conditions which has interrupted the shearing process. Another joint North and South Island sale will be organized within a fortnight's time.
