A delegation of cotton sector representatives from Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia recently visited Izmir, a province to the West of Turkey, under the aegis of the United Nations International Trade Center (ITC).

The 12-member team headed by Richard Parwot, an affiliate of the Ugandan Federation of National Cotton Growers, visited the cotton fields, ginneries and cotton yarn units in Izmir.

Deputy Chairman of the Association of Aegean Textile Exporters, Jak Eskinazi, while speaking at a news conference with the African team stated that, escalating demand has greatly driven the prices of cotton in the country, which churns out one million tons of cotton each year. Turkey as well as the African countries are required to boost their cotton production, he added.

The official divulged that, the Turkish Airlines (THY) has started direct flights to Tanzania and Uganda, and cited this to be a very good opportunity for them.

Parwot, divulged that, Uganda has over two million hectares of harvestable fields which are lying unused, and invited investors from Turkey to join them to explore these fields and to venture in the sector.
