Kinnauri Shawl has become the fourth traditionally designed and produced item after the Kullu Shawl, the Kangra Tea and the Chamba Rumal of Himachal Pradesh to acquire the Geographical Indication (GI) registration.
According to an official spokesperson, Kinnauri Shawl has been registered under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999 by the Registrar, GI, Govt. of India. The Himachal Pradesh Patent Information Centre has played a key role in getting the Kinnauri Shawl registered under the act. It has been allotted certificate No.125 and GI No.149.
He further added that, the registration of this traditional product would check the illegal production of the shawl and the exploitation of its brand name. Any breach of the act would call for a maximum of three year's imprisonment and a fine up to a limit of Rs 2 lakh.
