Seminar held on harnessing benefits of GI tag

A seminar was recently organized by the All-India Carpet Manufacturer's Association (AICMA), Bhadohi, along with the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, UP branch, Office of Joint Director Industries, The Great Bhadohi Carpet Society and Human Welfare Association (HWA) on various post-GI activities like forming committees, organizing awareness campaigns on the advantages of the GI tag, for those sectors who have received the same.

It may be recollected that the handwoven Bhadohi carpet had acquired the Geographical Indication (GI) certification in September, 2010. Following the GI certification of Banarasi silk and brocade, the handwoven Bhadohi carpet has become a part of the group of other GI marked products like Pochampalli, Tirupati laddu and Darjeeling tea from the region within a period of one year.

The Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt is the largest carpet manufacturing centre of India. It exports carpets worth Rs 25,000 million approximately to other nations of the world and employs about 3.2 million workers.

The advantages of GI registration incorporate stopping the illegal use of GI certified products by others, enhancement in exports and financial wellbeing of producers. The exclusive rights to use the GI distinction are for the products which are produced in the region.

As per the set standard, the certified users of a GI registered product can seek a legal course against the misuse of the GI tag. The violation of the norm can call for a sentence of imprisonment for a period between six months to three years and a penalty between Rs 50,000 to 200,000 rupees.
