The handicraft sector of Colombia has entered the global market with exports worth $19 million between 2007 and 2010.
Candles, ceramics, items made of vegetable fibres, wood and leather are among the products which have been exported by the sector.
The artisan crafts normally have sales of $8 million every year.
Handicrafts contribute significantly in the economy of Colombia. It provides 15 percent of the total employment in the domestic manufacturing. Around 350,000 people earn their livelihood entirely from this sector.
Proexport – the company, which has the responsibility of promoting export products of Colombia and tourism, is further trying to reinforce the country's presence in the global market. The company has given invitation to five American customers to Medellin's forthcoming Expoartesano fair.
The fair will be organized from 3rd to 8th November in Plaza Mayor in Medellin. It is likely to display handicrafts created by the top 200 craftsmen from Colombia.
