According to the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), Japan is the biggest importer of textile and clothing from Peru in the Asia-Pacific region. The Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) settled with Japan is likely to benefit the textile and clothing sector in Peru in a big way.

Carlos Durand – the Chairman of the FTC, stated that China is the major supplier of textiles and clothing in Japan and is followed by countries like Vietnam and India. These markets are marked with higher competition, seasonality as well as well-planned and persistent market promotion.

He added that Japan values the quality as well as product presentation in case of textiles and prefers natural fibres and hand-made products. The Japanese people have a greater preference for lightweight, well-designed textiles with variations in designs and colors.

He also remarked that brand value is also significant as it gives recognition to the brand and is a way which enables the customers to differentiate between various brands. The textile and apparel business in Peru have immense business prospects in Japan, particularly the alpaca fibre, which has established itself as an index for assessing the value and quality of textiles in other nations.

He expressed his belief that the FTA negotiated with Japan will enhance the inflow of investments from Japan to Peru and boost its exports of value-added products. Japan is the fifth biggest country to which Peru exports its products.
