Textile company to benefit from labor disputes settlement

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced the settlement of three more labor disputes, averting potential strikes in the companies and ensuring unhampered work for their workers.

“The National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) has successfully resolved the labor disputes at the Manila Pavillon Hotel in Manila, Victoria Marketing Corporation in Pasig City and Montebello Villa Hotel in Cebu City, averting potential work disruption in those three companies,” Labor and Employement Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz said.

“I am pleased with the way the NCMB did its job,” she added, saying this recent development contributes greatly to the realization of the 22-point labor and employment agenda of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

After exhaustive efforts by the NCMB, the management agreed on November 3 to withdraw the notice of the temporary lay-off filed at the DOLE-National Capital Regional Office (NCR) affecting the MAPSA members, and opted to implement a reduced workday for November and December 2010, and January 2011. Both parties agreed to file a duly signed notice on the reduction of workdays at the DOLE-NCR.

The workday reduction scheme has the following component: three workdays for the month of November 2010, four workdays for December 2010, and four workdays for January 2011.

In the dispute involving Victoria Manufacturing Corporation Employees Union (VMC) and its union, the VMC Employees Union (VMCEU), 122 members will benefit from the P525, 000 worth of back wages and one-time lump sum bonus resulting to the NCMB-mediated settlement of a collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

Victoria Manufacturing Corporation is a leading textile company in the Philippines. It has products that include raschel laces, nylon and polyester tricot, hook and eye tapes, and ready-made bedding items. It employs 170 workers, 122 of which are union members.

On the other hand, P1.5 million worth of economic package will benefit 68 members of the NUWHRAIN-Montebello Villa Hotel after the NCMB exerted efforts to arrive to a mutually acceptable solution resolving the dispute between the union and the management of Montebello Villa on alleged violation of human rights and deadlock in CBA.

“The Christmas holidays are forthcoming, and the settlement of these disputes will hopefully bring the workers and the management good cheer,” Baldoz remarked.
