Union Textile Ministry to set up AC carpet mart in UP

India's first ever AC mart exclusively displaying carpets is soon going to be established in eastern UP's Mirzapur region. This is being done with a view to strengthen the carpet industry in the district.

The Union Ministry of Textile's Office of the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) will be establishing this mart under the Carpet Cluster Project, to mitigate the gap between the producers and the buyers, and to provide the carpet producers with a platform where they can unite and showcase their products. As soon as the Ministry decides on the location of the mart, a professional would be hired to design and build the mart.

The mart intended to be set up at a cost of about Rs. 200 million, would be amongst the largest projects undertaken under the Carpet Cluster Project.

The mart definitely would provide that boost to the industry which is very much essential for the industry as old as over three and a half centuries. Presently, the carpet producers get an opportunity to showcase their products only either at their factories or during the carpet expos that are held in Delhi and Varanasi. There was no common platform where they can all unite throughout the year. The mart would satisfy this requirement. It would be made centrally air-conditioned so that it can draw local as well as foreign buyers, thereby offering world-class facilities.
