NearSea & Daniel Sanders tie up revives textile mill country

Sanders has a long history of working with Southern mills and manufacturing, as well as a commitment to the domestic "green" textile industry. He was the first president of the National Organic Cotton Association, which later merged with the Sustainable Cotton Project, or SCP. He is the only founding board member of the SCP remaining on the current board. "My professional ties to trade organizations are a constant reminder that we are not only positioning ourselves to revive an industry, but to live out a vision in our own lives," Sanders says.

Both NearSea Naturals and Sanders emphasize organic products and sustainable lifestyles, a focus with an enormous appeal to customers. Even during these challenging economic times, the business' combined yearly income is approximately $1.5 million; they anticipate significantly improved sales as a result of the partnership.

The first visible result of Sanders' and NearSea Naturals' combined efforts can be seen in a new line of designer fabrics – the ML Marsh Collection: Organic Designer Fabrics – that is entirely made in the United States. "Organic fabrics and styles can be as fashionable as anything else on the market," states designer Marylou Marsh, whose collection of organic fabrics for Winter 2011 is offered exclusively by NearSea Naturals. Marsh's commitment to sustainability dates back to the 1980s, when she designed women's contemporary clothing in New York City and produced private-label designs for companies, including Ralph Lauren, Nike, and Coldwater Creek. This is the first time NearSea Naturals has offered a complete seasonal line of organic fabrics for designers.

"Organic and sustainable fabrics are making a comeback in the United States," says Culp, "because of increasing consumer awareness about the importance of sustainability throughout the entire cycle. We moved our production to Asheville because it is a gateway to the existing textile mills. We're doing this at the right time, for the right reason, and we're finding that more and more people are ready to go green for the whole nine yards."
