Rains bring another round of woes for textile sector

The unseasonal rains lashing the state of Gujarat could put the textile industry in a worry of beads. Three major crops, including cotton, paddy and groundnut are likely to be affected to various extents.

Although figures are not available, sources estimate the cotton crop loss at around 10 percent, and if these rains continue or are accompanied by hailstorms, these projections could grow further.

Since the cotton farmers have already completed around 50 percent of the plucking, the rest of the standing cotton crop is likely to be affected and also those, lying in the open at the farms and ginneries.

Gujarat contributes 33 percent of the cotton produced in the country and if estimates prove correct or increase, prices of cotton which have flared up in recent months, could receive a further boost, on news of a damaged crop.
