According to the North Western Province Rural Industries Minister – Gunadasa Dehigama, formulation of plans, to provide pension to the handloom workers from textile industry, is in progress. The handloom sector is one of the country's legacies. The domestic textile industry experienced a downfall with the beginning of open economy in 1977. The government of Sri Lanka has taken a number of measures to upgrade the domestic textile industry, he stated.

These revelations were made by the Minister while he was at the inaugural ceremony of the Janasalu Centre at Ibbagamuwa. The upgradation of the Janasalu Centre had cost Rs one million. The Minister further remarked that, the domestic textile sector had made great advancements before 1977, when liberalization of the economy took place.

The textile industry of the country reflected a downward trend as several apparel manufacturing units equipped with the advanced machinery had emerged. But at present, it has come out of the downward spiral and is heading towards further development, said the Minister.
