The Union Government may soon waive the weavers' cooperative loans, said Dayanidhi Maran, Union Textiles Minister. Maran, who headed the foundation ceremony of a mega handloom cluster in Tamil Nadu, said that in accordance with the DMK government's scheme of waiving the crop loans of cultivators in Tamil Nadu, he is trying to get the weavers' loan up to Rs 20 billion waived off.
Deputy Chief Minister of the State, M.K. Stalin laid the cornerstone of the project involving a total investment of Rs 870 million, with the Centre financing Rs 700 million of it. He said that, Maran has strongly pleaded the Finance Minister to consider writing off the loans of the weavers which they have received through the cooperative societies.
Stalin said that Dayanidhi Maran will make sure that these loans get waived in order to stand up to the expectations of the weavers. Stalin also presented a list of other weaver-oriented projects that the Centre has approved, which even includes a silk park project in Kancheepuram on the basis of the State Government's demands.
He further said that, all the promises made prior to the last assembly elections in 2006 were fulfilled, and that the CM has rather excelled to accomplish even those schemes which were not promised during the elections.
