Tripura handloom weavers seek govt support

The handloom weavers in Agartala, who have been incurring heavy losses, have alleged that the Tripura Government's policies have held back the marketing and financial assistance that they were getting under various programmes.

Previously, a particular kind of weave was in demand, but now with passage of time the demand for the same has declined over the last few years.

Also that, initially the government used to purchase these products under a programme meant to uphold the rural crafts, but now it has ceased to do so, which also has increased the misery of these handloom weavers.

The government initially bought their goods through the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society (PACCS), but now it has stopped doing so, and this has put the handloom workers in trouble, who are now claiming that it won't be possible for them to continue without government support.
